Vedic Addition (Columnar with Carry)

Key Sutras/Concepts: Saṅkalana Vyavakalanābhyāṃ, Pūraṇāpūraṇābhyāṃ, Left-to-Right

Vedic addition often emphasizes mental calculation. The columnar method shown here is similar to conventional addition but focuses on clear carry management.

Interactive Addition Tool:

Enter numbers to see Vedic addition steps.

Vedic Subtraction (Complements / Left-to-Right)

Key Sutras: Nikhilaṃ Navataścaramaṃ Daśataḥ, Ekanyūnena Pūrveṇa

Subtraction can be performed left-to-right, digit by digit. If a digit in the subtrahend is larger than the corresponding digit in the minuend, a "borrow" is made from the left and the complement (from 10) of the difference is taken.

Interactive Subtraction Tool:

Enter numbers to see Vedic subtraction steps.

Nikhilam Multiplication (Nikhilaṃ Navataścaramaṃ Daśataḥ)

Principle: "All from 9 and the Last from 10"

This Sutra is for multiplying numbers near a power of 10 (base).

Interactive Calculator:

Enter numbers and base.

Ūrdhva Tiryagbhyāṃ (Vertically and Crosswise Multiplication)

Principle: "Vertically and Crosswise"

A general method for all multiplications.

Interactive Calculator:

Enter two numbers.

Special Multiplications

Sutras: Ekādhikena Pūrveṇa, Ekanyūnena Pūrveṇa, etc.

Vedic Maths has elegant shortcuts for specific multiplication cases.

1. Squaring Numbers Ending in 5 (Ekādhikena Pūrveṇa)

Enter a number ending in 5.

2. Multiplication by Series of 9s (Ekanyūnena Pūrveṇa & Nikhilam)

Enter number and multiplier (9, 99, etc.).

Nikhilam Division

Sutra: Nikhilaṃ Navataścaramaṃ Daśataḥ

Used when the divisor is slightly less than a power of 10 (base).

Interactive Nikhilam Division Tool:

Enter dividend and divisor.

Straight Division (General Method)

Sutra: (Implicitly) Ūrdhva Tiryagbhyāṃ variant, Dhvajānka

This is a general division method, often called "Flag-Pole method" or Dhvajānka.

Interactive Straight Division Tool:

Enter dividend and divisor.

Parāvartya Yojayet Division (Transpose and Apply)

Sutra: Parāvartya Yojayet

This method is used when the divisor is slightly greater than a power of 10.

Interactive Parāvartya Division Tool:

Interactive Paravartya Division tool is under development.

Squaring Numbers

Methods: Yāvadūnaṃ, Ekādhikena Pūrveṇa, Dvanda Yoga (Duplex)

1. Yāvadūnaṃ Squaring (Numbers near a base)

Enter number and base.

2. Dvanda Yoga (Duplex Method - General Squaring)

The Duplex D(n) is: D(a)=a²; D(ab)=2ab; D(abc)=2ac+b²; etc. The square is obtained by summing Duplex values of digit groups.

Enter number for Duplex squaring.

Finding Square Roots

Methods: Vilokanaṃ (Observation for perfect squares), General Method

For perfect squares, Vilokanam helps determine the root. A general method exists for all numbers.

Interactive Square Root Tool (Perfect Squares by Observation):

Enter a perfect square.

Finding Cubes

Methods: Yāvadūnaṃ, Ānurūpyeṇa

Interactive Cubing Tool (Yavadunam):

Yavadunam Cubing tool is under active development.

Finding Cube Roots (Perfect Cubes by Observation)

Sutra: Vilokanaṃ (Observation)

For perfect cubes, the cube root is found quickly by observing the last digit and grouping.

Interactive Cube Root Tool (Perfect Cubes):

Enter a perfect cube.

Vedic Check System (Digital Root / Beejank)

Principle: Casting out Nines

The digital root (Beejank) of a number is the single digit sum obtained by repeatedly adding its digits. It's used to verify arithmetic operations.

Interactive Vedic Check Tool:

For division check: Num1=Dividend, Num2=Divisor, Num3=Claimed Remainder, Claimed Result=Claimed Quotient.

More Vedic Techniques & Applications

Divisibility Rules (Osculators)

Vedic Maths provides unique methods using "osculators" to check divisibility by primes like 7, 13, 17, 19, etc.

Select number and divisor.
